BIS Study Reveals Bitcoin On-Chain Metrics May Be Overstated by Up to 6 Times

A recent report from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has cast doubt on the reliability of key cryptocurrency metrics, highlighting fundamental measurement flaws that could skew Bitcoin's on-chain transfer values by as much as sixfold. This critique doesn't center on exchange-based trading volumes but instead scrutinizes the statistical logic behind blockchain's raw data, exposing significant precision deficits in the widely referenced on-chain figures.

The core issue stoking this discrepancy lies in Bitcoin's distinctive transaction architecture and the constraints of current measurement methods. When a user initiates a transfer, unused funds are often returned to the sender as "change," yet this output is recorded on the ledger as a separate transaction even though ownership hasn't actually shifted, leading to a substantial inflation of transaction counts. The researchers stress that metrics like volume, market capitalization, and total value locked (TVL) project a false sense of accuracy that their underlying data cannot substantiate.

More critically, market cap calculations are similarly distorted. Traditional algorithms estimate value based on the price at the time of a coin's most recent transaction, a practice that can occasionally produce results up to four times higher than the true market valuation. An analysis of 100 billion blockchain records from Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tron indicates these measurement challenges are pervasive, affecting the entire ecosystem rather than a single network.

Ethereum faces distinct hurdles due to its surge in smart contracts. Among roughly 67.5 million active contracts, as many as 54 million cannot be classified under existing standards, further complicating attempts to derive accurate economic signals. The functional split of stablecoins adds another layer of complexity: USDT on Ethereum is predominantly tied to DeFi activity, whereas USDT on Tron is largely utilized for payments or as a store of value.

Data from 2022 reveals that smart contracts on Ethereum held over 20% of its USDT supply, whereas Tron's figure was only about 1%. Aggregating these two ecosystems would muddle fundamentally different types of economic behavior, making such simplified comparisons counterproductive. Given that on-chain data should be treated as an "approximation with inherent errors, rather than a direct yardstick for economic activity," industry groups are now moving to filter out the noise.

One such effort comes from a Visa (V.US) on-chain analytics dashboard, supported by data from Allium Labs. By stripping out high-frequency trades, bot activity, cross-chain bridges, and internal exchange movements, the dashboard illustrates what true adjusted transaction volumes look like. Over the past month, monitored networks registered a total stablecoin volume of $6.4 trillion, yet the adjusted real volume stood at just $313.1 billion, a gap that makes the case for comprehensive data denoising to get a clearer picture of digital asset flows.
