Recent frontline data has revealed a notable shift in the buyer demographics for the Xiaomi Pengcheng series, a vehicle lineup that has generated significant buzz among new car releases in the latter half of the year. According to insights shared today by industry observer @Sun Shaojun, the profile of customers now placing orders for the Pengcheng N70 and N90 models suggests a clear departure from the brand's previous core following.
The feedback indicates that the purchase group for Pengcheng has distinctly expanded beyond Xiaomi's historical user circle. The primary demographic is concentrated among individuals aged 30-45, with men accounting for 80% of buyers. Furthermore, 80% of these purchasers are engaged in vehicle replacement or additional purchases, with most households already owning a fuel-powered car, painting a clear picture of the typical family-oriented consumer.
Where the market is heading
Compared to the younger, often single demographic drawn to the SU7, customers of the Pengcheng series place a greater emphasis on practicality for family use. Their decision-making prioritises interior space and driving range, with many having deliberated for some time before visiting showrooms for test drives, which ultimately cemented their decision to place a deposit. Market activity is notably strong, with stores averaging 80-100 new locked orders, a substantial increase in foot traffic, and weekend test drive numbers directly surpassing those of the YU7.
Configuration and colour preferences
In terms of specifications, the N90 model is the most favoured, capturing 60% of total orders. The N70 accounts for 25%, while the highly discussed N90 Explorer Edition, which features a rising roof, holds a 15% share. Regarding colour choices, users are predominantly selecting Volcanic Grey and Obsidian Black exteriors, paired with Sand Beige interiors. Key selling points that resonate strongly with buyers include the ultra-long sliding rails, high pure-electric range, and versatile interior space. Additionally, the in-car AI assistant, Xiao Ai, has proven particularly popular among younger family members.
Regional variations and competitors
Geographically, preferences show some divergence. Zhejiang leads in overall sales volume, Shandong has the highest single-store order numbers, and Sichuan tops the weekly single-store charts. Northern regions collectively exhibit a higher proportion of total orders. When it comes to competing models, customers frequently compare the Pengcheng series with offerings from Li Auto and Xpeng. In Shandong, a significant number of buyers weigh it against traditional MPVs, while in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai area, customers often consider NIO vehicles. Buyers in southern regions are more inclined to compare it with other pure-electric options.
In my view, what truly persuades customers is not merely brand nostalgia or launch event hype, but rather the tangible experience with the actual vehicle. Many visitors initially have a weak perception of the space, yet after sitting inside, touching the materials, and undertaking side-by-side comparisons with rivals, their purchase intention escalates rapidly. However, competition within the family-oriented extended-range SUV segment is already intense. Having successfully stepped beyond its fan base, the question remains whether the Pengcheng series can sustain this current momentum over the long term.
