Investor Confidence Wanes as Equity Positions Hold Steady, Notes Citigroup Strategist

Strategists at Citigroup indicate that while positioning in US equity index futures remains modestly bullish, overall exposure has declined, signaling a drop in investor participation ahead of critical inflation data.

The team, led by David Chu, observes that the recent rebuilding of long positions in US equity index futures has stalled, with short positions making a comeback. Over the past week, net fund flows in S&P 500 futures have turned mildly bearish, although longer-term positioning still sits slightly above neutral levels.

According to the strategists, the strain on US futures book profits and losses has yet to reach the extreme positioning levels typically associated with a full-scale capitulation event.
