Guiyang Advances Automation Upgrade for Power Distribution in Large Residential Community

Guiyang's Huaguoyuan mega-community is making steady progress on its 10kV feeder automation renovation, according to the China Southern Power Grid Guiyang Power Supply Bureau. The project, which covers multiple feeder groups, has completed commissioning and is advancing on schedule as a key initiative for smart distribution network upgrades.

The renovation targets supply bottlenecks common in high-density urban areas, where tall residential towers keep electricity demand elevated year-round. Previously, parts of the community relied on property-managed power facilities that offered limited monitoring and slow fault response times.

To solve these issues at the source, the power bureau partnered with local authorities to take over distribution assets formerly managed by the property company. Work is underway to enhance the existing 10kV feeders and establish a "hand-in-hand" ring main configuration.

Once complete, smart switches and fault indicators will work in tandem to detect line abnormalities in real time. In the event of a short circuit or ground fault, the system will automatically identify and isolate the affected segment, then restore power to healthy sections via tie switches—all without human involvement.

This shift from passive repair to active self-healing means outages can be isolated and power restored within seconds for unaffected areas. It marks the first time Huaguoyuan's distribution network has been equipped with autonomous decision-making capability.

During construction, crews used load transfer and live-line techniques to move power demand to adjacent feeders, ensuring uninterrupted service. Even with active line connections on site, residents' air conditioning and business refrigeration continued running without interruption.

Looking ahead, the bureau will push forward with the remaining feeder upgrades. Once fully complete, Huaguoyuan's distribution network will deliver stronger self-healing capabilities and greater supply stability.
