GAC's High-Tech Arm Targets High-Speed Rail Travelers with Air Taxi Service

A new travel option is emerging for passengers departing from high-speed rail stations: hopping into an air taxi at a cost three to five times that of a standard ride-hailing fare to reach their city destination. This concept was unveiled on September 9th as Guangdong Gaoyu Technology Co., Ltd., the high-tech arm of GAC Group, announced a partnership with Guangzhou Railway Investment and Construction Group Co., Ltd. to pilot low-altitude air shuttle services at key transportation hubs, including the Baiyun Station transit center.

The initiative aims to capture a portion of the transfer expenses paid by intercity rail travelers. Beyond Baiyun Station, the companies are considering additional sites with high passenger volumes and favorable airspace conditions, including Zhenlong and Dashi stations. A company executive explained the pricing vision, which targets a premium over typical ride-hailing services, with final fares varying based on route distance and airspace requirements.

This application presents a different set of demands for aircraft compared to tourism-focused flights, which attract passengers seeking a scenic experience. For air shuttle commuters, the destination and schedule take precedence over in-flight views. The plan involves allowing passengers to pre-book their rail tickets and then select a corresponding low-altitude flight for the final leg of their journey upon arrival. Future coordination with ground transportation partners, such as mapping and ride-hailing platforms, is envisioned to create a seamless travel experience through a single app.

However, the business model faces a fundamental operational balancing act. Offering frequent flights to accommodate time-sensitive travelers requires significant aircraft capacity, yet if seats remain unsold, each added flight amplifies operational costs. Conversely, reducing flight frequency to consolidate passenger flow could extend waiting times for some flyers. The premium pricing strategy, set at multiples of standard taxi fares, leaves little room for adjusting capacity through passenger waiting times.

The passenger volumes at hubs like Baiyun Station will provide a real-world testing ground for this economic equation. The initial station selection will depend on evaluating passenger origin-destination patterns and the technical requirements of each potential landing site. The companies plan to conduct detailed analysis and design of each touchdown point, considering the unique characteristics, pedestrian flow, and existing transportation infrastructure at each location.

The partnership leverages the rail operator's expertise in transit hub management, combined with the air mobility company's research and development capabilities in passenger-carrying electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, along with its full-chain industrial solutions. The initial project phase will involve site selection studies, feasibility assessments, and construction planning, followed by the development of take-off and landing sites and pilot operations to validate transfer coordination, safety protocols, and overall service delivery.

The efficiency of ground transfer processes will directly impact the pricing power of this service. Any time spent walking from the rail platform to the departure point, clearing security, boarding, and then arranging ground transport after landing reduces the time savings offered by the aerial segment. The effectiveness of these ground operations will, in turn, influence how much passengers are willing to pay for the flight. This integrated service approach extends the company's responsibilities beyond just operating the aircraft itself.

For the initial hub deployment, the company plans to utilize its GOVY AirCab model, which is designed for short-distance urban transfers. This strategy assigns long-distance transportation to the rail network, while the air taxi handles the post-arrival distribution, allowing services to be organized around a limited number of shuttle routes to avoid the pressure of launching an extensive network immediately.

The company is currently advancing airworthiness certification under the guidelines of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, conducting compliance verification while also coordinating with industry partners on airspace management, weather services, and traffic control. The development roadmap prioritizes validating safety and dispatch capabilities at hub locations using the AirCab to build public confidence, before introducing longer-range aircraft models in the future.
