South Korea's National Pension Fund Halts FX Hedging Amid Won Strength

South Korea's National Pension Service (NPS) has halted its foreign exchange hedging operations and resumed dollar purchases as the won strengthens, according to anonymous forex market sources cited by Yonhap Infomax.

The pension fund had initiated the sale of dollar forward contracts in early June, marking its first foreign exchange hedging activity under the new framework. However, with the dollar-won exchange rate recently breaking below the 1,350 level and retreating to the 1,330 range, the institution now views this as an attractive entry point for dollar buying.

Infomax quoted a foreign bank forex trader as saying that the pension fund's dollar buying volume is currently insufficient to shift the overall market direction. The dollar-won pair touched an intraday low of 1,334.70 and is currently trading near the 1,346 level.
