Former Deloitte China Deputy Chair Patrick Yip Joins Merits & Tree's Hong Kong Practice as Co-Head of Global Private Wealth

Patrick Yip, the former deputy chairman of Deloitte China, has joined the Hong Kong office of law firm Merits & Tree as co-head of its global private wealth practice.

Yip served as an international tax partner at Deloitte China beginning in 1998, adding the role of deputy chairman from 2018. After departing Deloitte in May 2025, he held positions as Asia vice-chair at MCL Lawyers and tax specialist at KPMG Law before taking on his new role.

As a seasoned international tax partner, Yip specializes in US international tax, cross-border tax matters involving mainland China and Hong Kong, as well as M&A transactions. He also provides cross-border trust and asset planning services for high-net-worth individuals, and is an expert on the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) and the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).

His career includes participation in tax policy discussions with Chinese and Hong Kong tax authorities. Fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, Yip holds US and Hong Kong CPA credentials, a California attorney license, and serves as a part-time professor at the University of Hong Kong's School of Business.

In a post on LinkedIn, Yip said, "In this new role, I look forward to contributing to the global expansion of Merits & Tree, while providing higher-quality, more integrated services to clients with tax and legal needs across mainland China, Hong Kong, and the United States."
