China's corporate reform research body is set to accelerate the international harmonization of its ESG standards by rolling out three strategic programs, according to information released on September 6. The initiatives aim to balance global alignment with local adaptation, positioning China's unique approach to sustainability governance on the world stage.

The upcoming EESG Innovation Annual Meeting (2026) and the second ESG Expo, scheduled for September 19-21, will serve as key platforms for this push. During the events, several major publications will be released, including the 2026 China ESG Development Observation Report, the 2026 China Enterprise ESG Practice Report, and the 2026 Blue Book on Corporate Social Responsibility Brand Projects.

Fan Jianlin, Vice President of the China Enterprise Reform and Development Society and former Director of the Retired Cadres Bureau of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, emphasized that China's ESG framework must pursue a dual-track strategy. He stressed the importance of aligning with international disclosure standards while simultaneously incorporating local priorities such as rural revitalization and dual carbon goals, ensuring that ESG remains rooted in promoting sustainable development.

At the heart of China's contribution to global ESG governance lies the concept of "impact materiality," a distinctly Chinese perspective that seeks to guide global standards toward greater diversity and inclusivity. Fan noted that this approach should be action-oriented, focusing on reducing negative externalities and expanding positive ones, thereby keeping ESG true to its original purpose of advancing sustainability.

To bring this vision to life, the research society is advancing three key initiatives. The first focuses on system building, combining standard development with international engagement. On one front, the society is benchmarking against global frameworks like the International Sustainability Standards Board and actively participating in international dialogue, bringing Chinese practices directly to the table where global rules are shaped. On the other, it is spearheading the creation of group standards spanning the entire chain of disclosure, evaluation, compilation, management, and assurance, aiming to secure international recognition from the World Sustainable Standards Organization for two domestic supplier ESG rating platforms and supply chain group standards.

The second initiative targets ecosystem strengthening, pairing service standardization with collaborative development. Leveraging its position as a think tank under the SASAC and its extensive membership network of central enterprises, state-owned companies, and listed firms, the society is partnering with professional institutions like the Responsibility Cloud Research Institute to foster coordination among ESG service providers. A key breakthrough will be the implementation of the Enterprise ESG Report Assurance Guidelines, which links disclosure, verification, strategy, and digitalization into a cohesive chain, creating a standardized, credible, and efficient ESG service ecosystem.

The third initiative centers on talent cultivation, combining training programs with evaluation mechanisms. The society is committed to providing ongoing training and professional certification for senior ESG management personnel, targeting ESG leaders at central enterprises and executives at listed companies. Supported by the group standard on ESG Management Personnel Capability Requirements, these efforts provide benchmarks for enterprises to select, deploy, and develop talent, transforming human resources into a key driver of growth and turning the "critical variable" of talent into the "maximum increment" for development.

The upcoming EESG Innovation Annual Meeting (2026) and the second ESG Expo, themed "Value Leadership and Ecosystem Co-building," will adopt an integrated conference-and-exhibition model featuring a "1+5+1" exhibition layout. The events are co-hosted by the China Enterprise Reform and Development Society and Shougang Group Co., Ltd.
