Investor Confidence Endures in Macroeconomy and AI Spending, Yet Caution Creeps In, Finds BofA Survey

A recent survey conducted by Bank of America indicates that investors continue to hold positive views on the macroeconomic outlook and anticipate robust growth in artificial intelligence capital expenditure. However, underlying anxieties regarding potential disorderly surges in bond yields and the possibility of a sweeping Democratic victory in the midterm elections have tempered market sentiment, fostering a more cautious approach.

The team of strategists, led by Michael Hartnett, noted in their report that the September global fund manager survey reveals a rise in cash allocation levels, climbing from 3.5% to 3.9%. This marks the most significant single-month increase since March, suggesting that the excessive optimism seen during the summer months is beginning to wane. The report advises that it would be appropriate to increase risk exposure only when cash ratios return to a neutral range of 4% to 5%.

Currently, investors' net underweight position in bonds has escalated to 48%, the highest level observed since May 2022. In contrast, the net overweight stance on equities stands at 49%, a noticeable decrease from the previous month's reading of 56%.
