Nearly an hour into his speech, President Trump announced what he described as "the best part of the speech": direct payments to the American people funded by tariffs if Republicans hold onto both houses of Congress.
"Because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000," Trump said. He likened it to so-called "Warrior Dividend," the bonuses paid earlier this year to military members. Trump didn't say if he would push Congress to pass such a measure, or where the funding would come from amid mounting U.S. budget deficits-or why he isn't pursuing such a payment before the election. Such a measure would likely cost more than $1 trillion**.**
"So if the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000," he said to loud cheers from the crowd. "It will be called the Trump dividend."
